End of life care for the elderly asthmatic and COPD patients
Aims : Asthma and COPD are disorders which impose a significant risk on mortality. Developments in chronic and critical care resulted in a prolonged life expectancy and reduced exacerbation-related mortality in both diseases. However, patients with advanced disease experience an increasing frequency of exacerbations and longer in-hospital stay without a significant overall improvement in quality of life. This workshop will help the physicians to predict the natural course of an advanced disease in patients with asthma and COPD, develop a plan for palliative care and manage dyspnoea in terminally ill patients.
