To stress the importance of diaphragmatic dysfunction by describing its main causes and natural history; to provide new knowledge on assessing diaphragmatic dysfunction, with particular emphasis on ultrasound techniques; to discuss new insights on the diaphragm dysfunction that arises from mechanical ventilation; to describe how to treat diaphragm dysfunction.
