Aims : Motivational interviewing is a patient-centred, collaborative, and goal-oriented method that is designed to strengthen the personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for wanting a change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. In motivational interviewing, it is appropriate to provide information and advice, but only if the patient gives permission to receive it. The goal of the healthcare provider is to understand the patient’s perspective of the topic and their needs, and to help the patient to draw their own conclusion about the relevance of any information provided.
