Malignant pleural effusion management in 2017: a review of recent RCTs
Clinical
Aims : The goal of this symposium is to educate mainly respiratory physicians in terms of the current management of malignant pleural effusions and the recent advances in management. It will combine members from assemblies 1 (clinical) and 11 (oncology). The faculty contains known leaders in their field who have participated in previous symposia of this nature at other national and international meetings that were well attended and well received. The topics include prognostication when a patient presents with a malignant pleural effusion, with the aim of aiding the appropriate management. Talc pleurodesis methods will be reviewed along with the results of RCTs that compared the effectiveness of talc pleurodesis and indwelling pleural catheter placement. The primary results of the IPC-PLUS trial, which assessed whether combining both techniques improves outcomes, will be described. Finally, the results of the recent MAPS trial in mesothelioma management will be detailed.
