To describe the mechanisms by which hypoxia is sensed in the body, the many effects of hypoxia or abnormal hypoxia sensing on the body and its clinical consequences; to provide a diagnostic strategy that is based on physiological reasoning; to discuss therapeutic approaches and the important role of iron; to show whether breathlessness is due to hypoxia or abnormal hypoxia sensing.
