To understand the risks posed by pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs); to know how to initiate the appropriate management for patients with PAVMs when they present with symptoms or when the PAVM is found incidentally by chest radiography or thoracic computer tomography scanning; to be able to apply the different management principles for hypoxaemia and polycthaemia in PAVMs compared to other respiratory diseases and be able to recognise the additional challenges that are posed by hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), which frequently associates with PAVM.
