Aims : To provide an overview of inspiratory muscle physiology and pathophysiology; to describe the techniques and evidence for inspiratory muscle training in chronic respiratory disease; to describe the techniques and evidence supporting inspiratory muscle training in the intensive care unit; and to describe the dose dependent effects of inspiratory muscle testing and training in patients with neuromuscular conditions.
